August 19, 2009
On August 19, Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly met with American post hardcore rock band Blessthefall (Beau Bokan , Mike Frisby, Eric Lambert, Matt Traynor, and Jared Warth) and members of the Argentine organization called Juventud en Riesgo (Youth at Risk). This meeting is part of the U.S. Embassy’s Music Outreach Program which aims to connect American musicians with young Argentines and community groups.
“Argentines and Americans have a lot in common. Music is one of the things that bring our two cultures together. We were honored to bring together an Argentine organization, Juventud en Riesgo, that does so much for young Argentines with Blessthefall, a socially engaged band with a growing following in this country , ” said Chargé d´Affaires Tom Kelly after the meeting.
Blessthefall, which is based out of Phoenix, Arizona, is currently on their first ever South American tour which includes stops in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, and Peru. Juventud en Riesgo is a Christian organization that runs a variety of community programs including working with at risk youth and helping prisoners reintegrate into society. The organization runs a shelter for homeless children and youth, rehabilitation centers in underprivileged neighborhoods, and programs to increase awareness about drugs and HIV. Additionally, the group organizes a large concert series each December called Rock and Vida designed to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
During the meeting, the representatives from Juventud en Riesgo presented information about their various programs to members of Blessthefall with the intention of possibly collaborating in the future. Blessthefall will be performing tonight at Super Rock in Buenos Aires.
