BACK IN ARGENTINA, YOUTH AMBASSADORS HOSTED AT THE EMBASSY
April 13, 2009
“The enriching experience you have had will remain with you throughout your entire lives and helps foster the existing strong relation between the peoples of Argentina and the United States,” said U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires Thomas Kelly.
U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires Thomas Kelly received on April 13, ten Argentine students returning from the United States where they represented Argentina as 2009 Youth Ambassadors between March 28 and April 11.
Youth Ambassadors 2009 come from 10 provinces: MAURO AGUSTIN CALIBA, Salta; MARTIN LA ROSA, Córdoba; IARA LUQUE BLANCO, Chaco; ANDREA MINGOLLA PATTON, Tucumán; DANIELA MEDINA, province of Buenos Aires; RODRIGO PERELLO, Río Negro; ROMINA PONCIO, Santiago del Estero; MARCOS PORRINI, city of Buenos Aires; ALEJANDRA WATERLOO, Entre Ríos; MAIRA RAIMONDI, Santa Cruz.
The children talked with Mr. Kelly and described the experiences that helped them learn about U.S. culture and society and also make presentations about Argentina in the United States. The kids also highlighted the importance of meeting their Argentine counterparts and learn more about the country during the trip.
Youth Ambassadors visited the city of Washington, DC and met U.S. government officials. They visited historic monuments and attended cultural events. The children were hosted during 10 days by American families in the state of Montana and attended school where they gave presentations on their country.
This is the third edition of the Youth Ambassadors Program, an initiative of the U.S. Embassy in collaboration with the Fulbright Commission, Partners of the Americas and public and private organizations in both countries. The students were selected among 350 candidates and are between 16 and 18 years old, come from public schools, have good English proficiency and no previous travel abroad. The students also stand out for showing strong social commitment to their communities. The program helps these children establish ties of lasting friendship, improve their English and come up with new ideas on community and social work. To date, 27 students from 17 Argentine provinces have participated in the Youth Ambassadors Program.
