AMBASSADOR WAYNE RECEIVES TRANSLATOR OF JORGE LUIS BORGES, DONALD YATES

Ambassador Wayne received on December 12 the U.S. writer and academic Donald Yates – renowned specialist on Jorge Luis Borges – recently being awarded a Guggenheim fellowship to write a book on the famous Argentine author and their friendship.

The Ambassador congratulated Mr. Yates for being recognized Illustrious Citizen of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires by the City Minister of Culture Hernán Lombardi during a ceremony held at the Argentine Catholic University on December 2. During his visit to the country, Mr. Yates was also recognized by the Argentine Academy of Letters.

Donald Yates is Doctor of Letters, specialized in Spanish language. Yates earned his graduate and post-graduate degrees from Michigan State University where he works at present as professor emeritus. Mr. Yates has translated into English the first book of Jorge Luis Borges, ranking fifth in the list of translations of the world’s most important books.  

During the meeting with Ambassador Wayne, Mr. Yates recalled his first trip to Argentina as Fulbright fellow in 1962 when he met Jorge Luis Borges and became close friends. Back in the United States, Yates will continue to work on a book about the life and works of Jorge Luis Borges and their friendship.
