Demonstrations March 18, 2009

Warden Message – Demonstrations March 18, 2009

The U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires has learned that there may be up to four demonstrations in the City of Buenos Aires today, Wednesday, March 18, 2009.

(1)  More Security:  various non governmental organizations (NGOs) have called for Argentine citizens to peacefully demonstrate the lack of security.  The demonstration will occur at Plaza de Mayo at approximately 6 p.m. and end as late at 9 p.m.  The NGOs are calling for 50,000 participants, but the final turnout may not reach this level.  There are also unconfirmed reports that a counter-demonstration may also occur in the downtown area supporting GOA security efforts.

(2)  Teachers:  Up to 1,000 protestors may take to the streets again as they did on March 17.  The demonstration is unconfirmed, according to police sources.  If it occurs, the demonstration will take place near 9 of Julio Ave. and proceed to the Congress Building and City Hall.  Time is unknown.

(3)  Agriculture Producers:  police sources have unconfirmed information that the agro-producers may demonstrate at the Ministry of Labor (Ave. Leandro Alem) and the Congress Building.  The time and numbers of protestors are unknown.

Spontaneous demonstrations take place in Argentina from time to time in response to world events or local developments.  We remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possible escalate into violence.  American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.  American citizens are urged to remain aware of their surroundings at all times and obtain additional up-to-the-minute information through the media.

Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the U.S. Embassy’s website the U.S. Department of State's, Bureau of Consular Affairs’ website www.travel.state.gov , where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information can be found.  The U.S. Embassy also encourages U.S. citizens to review to "A Safe Trip Abroad," found at http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1747.html that includes valuable security information for those both living and traveling abroad.  In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.
