EMBASSY HOSTS U.S. SPEAKER ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING at
The Symposium of Foreign Languages,
 International Book Fair, Buenos Aires

Joelle Uzarski is the Regional English Language Officer (RELO) for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay.  She opened the RELO office in Santiago in December of 2006.  Ms. Uzarski earned her MATESL (Master Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and she has worked in Uzbekistan, South Korea, Brazil, Spain, and the United States training teachers, teaching, and developing tests and materials.

Ms. Uzarski was the keynote speaker at the 10th Symposium of Foreign Languages, part of the Buenos Aires International Book Fair, on May 2nd; Over 400 teachers were present for her lecture on “Teaching Pronunciation – Focus on Intelligibility.”  Joelle focused on the issue of intelligibility to conclude two main topics: rhythm and intonation patters in North American English, and common pronunciation challenges for Spanish speakers.  On Friday, May 4th, she conducted a three hour workshop at ICANA on “Shaping the Way We Teach English” for a select group of teacher trainers.
