Embassy Event
US DAY AT THE BOOK FAIR
May 7, 2009
The 35th Buenos Aires International Book Fair celebrated U.S.A. Day on May 7. On this occasion, the U.S. Embassy presented the Buenos Aires Cross Over Orchestra under the baton of Jose Luis Cladera. The orchestra played a repertoire of the most famous film soundtracks like Rocky, Mission: Impossible, Dances with Wolves, and Star Wars.
Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly opened the event after the remarks given by the President of Fundación El Libro Horacio Garcia. Mr. Kelly and Mr. Garcia highlighted the love for music shared by Argentines and Americans and mentioned several composers like Lalo Schiffrin (Argentine) who after meeting Dizzie Gillespie in the mid 50’s moved to the United States to start a successful international career.
“Argentina and the United States share many values and cultural traditions and without doubt, music is one of them. Music is a universal language and that is why we are hosting this concert, to remember soundtracks of those films that have made us laugh, think and feel,” said Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly while presenting the Buenos Aires Cross Over Orchestra.
With more than 50 musicians on stage, the concert was the most crowded event at the Book Fair. This is the second year that the Embassy presents Jose Luis Cladera and the Buenos Aires Cross Over Orchestra featuring American music classics.
