AMBASSADOR VILMA MARTINEZ OPENS MODEL UNITED NATIONS PROGRAM

Ambassador Vilma Martinez was one of the opening speakers for the program Model United Nations “Uniendo Metas.” The inauguration happened on October 30th at the University of Buenos Aires Law School, with the participation of about 1,000 high school students from all over the country. The event took place from October 30-November 1st.
“As founding member and host country, the United States is committed to supporting the United Nations. The United Nations Organization is an instrument to promote peace, security, liberty, and human rights,” stated the Ambassador.
The United Nations program “Uniendo Metas” was organized by the NGO Conciencia, and supported by the company SC Johnson. The opening ceremony took place with the dean of the law school present, Atilio Alterini, the vice dean, Tulio Eduardo Ortiz, the president of Conciencia, Lia Rueda, the City of Buenos Aires Government Chief of Cabinet, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, the director of Human Resources for the Southern Cone of SC Johnson, Daniel Lucarella, and the Cultural Specialist of the Dutch embassy, Peggy Vizzers.
 In her speech, the Ambassador said, “President Obama spoke in front of the General Assembly about four principal pillars for the future that we want for our children. They are: non-proliferation and disarmament, the promotion of peace and security, the preservation of our planet, and a global economy that promotes opportunities for all people.”
In addition, Ambassador Martinez announced the new edition of Young Ambassadors 2010 and mentioned other exchange programs offered by the Embassy. For more information about these programs go to  http://spanish.argentina.usembassy.gov/.
The students from the high school ETT No. 6 of San Nicolas, province of Buenos Aires, who represented the United States, received an Honorable Mention.

What is “Uniendo Metas”?
The general objective of the program is to promote in Argentine youth the formation of values, skills, and abilities in order to form adults with a sense of social responsibility, leadership, and teamwork to ensure and guarantee a continued democracy and strengthening of institutions in our country. 
 The program is based on the methodology of the Model Simulation of the United Nations, conceived as a project focused on forming leaders and promoting in them solidarity, tolerance, and respect of values and diversity.
