US Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne was the keynote speaker on Friday, November 10, at the opening of a Model UN program attended by some 1,000 high-school students from across the country at the University of Buenos Aires’ School of Law.

In his remarks, Wayne described the UN as “one of our most important and valuable institutions” and called on the students to engage in democratic participation. “All of us have a role in making our world a better place,” said the Ambassador.

The Model UN program was organized by the NGO Conciencia and sponsored by SC Johnson. The opening ceremony was attended by Law School Dean Atilio Alterini, Conciencia president Lucrecia Lacroze, SC Johnson president José Latugaye and Education Ministry Cabinet Chief Ignacio Hernaiz.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Wayne also announced a new program for students aged 15 to 18 called the Youth Ambassadors Program. Under this program, five outstanding Argentine public high-school students will be selected to spend two weeks in the U.S. in January to learn about the country’s culture and traditions, while also sharing their own with U.S. citizens. “The US Embassy here in Buenos Aires is committed to investing in Argentina’s youth to ensure that they have the tools necessary to succeed in our increasingly globalized world,” said Ambassador Wayne.
