CHARGÉ D’AFFAIRES THOMAS KELLY OPENS A COURSE SESSION ON INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AT UAI
May 9, 2009

During the opening session of a Universidad Abierta Interamericana postgraduate course on international relations on May 9, Chargé d'Affaires Thomas P. Kelly spoke about “Argentina-U.S. Relations: Charting the Future” before an audience of about 60 students and professors and told them that it's an exciting time in Argentine-U.S. relations.

"It's important to deal pragmatically with the issues that are facing the people of the Americas today, to leave behind the ideological arguments of the past, and focus instead on how we can work towards forming effective partnerships on a host of issues and to start the hard work of making progress in dealing with the economic crisis, on energy and climate future, and on issues related to citizens' safety," said Mr. Kelly.

Mr. Kelly commented on recent productive exchanges between the U.S. and Argentine presidents and pointed to the recent Summit of the Americas and what it augurs for U.S. relations with the entire Latin American region.

"This is an exciting time to consider our bilateral relationship, as our two governments both build on past ties and chart new areas for collaboration under a new U.S. Administration," Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly told student leaders.

Mr. Kelly also encouraged students in the audience to build and strengthen bilateral relations with ideas and participation. "People to people diplomacy is an essential foundation for relations between Argentina and the United States," he said.

Following his speech, Mr. Kelly took questions from the audience on a variety of topics related to foreign policy and U.S.-Argentine relations.
