AMBASSADOR WAYNE OPENS TRAINING CONFERENCE IN SALTA
April 28, 2009
Ambassador Wayne and Salta Governor Juan Manuel Urtubey inaugurated on April 28, a training conference on the Centers for Drug Information (CDI).
“The CDI program is one piece of a much larger and expanding commitment by the United States to assist its neighbors in the Western Hemisphere and increase cooperation to address the challenges of public security," declared Ambassador Wayne.
The CDI is an information sharing system implemented in June 2003 and already running in 50 countries worldwide, with 41 sites in the Western Hemisphere. It is an internet-based network that allows better and wider coordination among the agencies in charge of fighting drugs at the regional and international level. Argentina has been chosen to host the regional center for the Southern Cone, one of the six centers in the program. The national government has recently ordered that the center be located in Buenos Aires and run by the Federal Police.
“The United States government appreciates the high level of bilateral cooperation that exists between our two countries, as we work together to fight the scourge of drug trafficking,” said the Ambassador.
The Ambassador also thanked provincial authorities for their contribution to this work. Holding the conference in the province of Salta is an example of the importance of working at regional level in the struggle against drugs. The conference was attended by representatives from Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay; as well as representatives of the Federal Police.
“The CDI program shows that the concept of sharing information leads to operational success in the struggle against drugs”, said Ambassador Wayne.
