THE EMBASSY CELEBRATES PRESIDENTIAL SWEARING-IN
January 20, 2009

The Embassy celebrated on January 20 the inauguration of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden with two events, attended by Embassy staff and special guests.

Ambassador Wayne offered a reception at his residence for 200 government officials, diplomats, politicians, businessmen, journalists, and intellectuals. Embassy Press Officer Mara Tekach made a presentation on the government transition process in the United States . Minutes before the swearing-in ceremony, Ambassador Wayne stated in a speech that the new administration will open “a new chapter” in US relations with the region.

As President Obama said last week, his administration will open ‘a new page, a new chapter’ in relations with Latin America . As Americans, he added, our responsibility is not to ‘dictate policies’ but find mutual interest through cooperation," said the Ambassador.

At the Embassy, more than a hundred employees and their families gathered to watch the swearing-in ceremony, and were very moved by President Obama’s inaugural address.
