U.S. EMBASSY HOSTED A PROGRAM ON CIVIC LITERACIES AND ENGLISH TEACHING
September 21-28, 2006
The U.S. Embassy hosted the visit of Professor Spencer Salas, Presidential Graduate Fellow, Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of Georgia, from September 21 to 28, 2006. Professor Salas gave a series of lectures in the cities of Rosario and Santa Fe on “Civic Literacies and English Teaching as a Foreign Language,” to discuss and explore the intersection of language education, civic education, and contemporary society in the EFL classroom. In Rosario, Professor Salas participated as the US Keynote Speaker, at the 31st FAAPI (Argentine Federation of Associations of English Teachers) Convention.

Spencer Salas Biography
From 2001-2003, Spencer Salas served as the US. Department of State's Senior English Language Fellow to Peru. There, he collaborated with the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru to design and launch multiple postgraduate TESOL certification programs. With the U.S. Embassy in Lima, he led a two-year county-wide professional development effort for English teachers for the country's seven Binational Centers (BNCs). Phi Beta Kappa, University of Virginia (1991); M.Ed., The George Washington University (1996), he has led teacher development efforts in the U.S., Peru, Chile, Madagascar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Morocco. A frequent participant in the U.S. Department of State’s English Language Specialist Program, Spencer is visiting Argentina for his second time. He is currently the University of Georgia's Presidential Graduate Fellow, where he is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Language and Literacy Education.
