Ambassador's Speech

REMARKS BY AMBASSADOR WAYNE AT UN MODEL – GENERAL ASSEMBLY PROGRAM - UNIVERSITY OF BUENOS AIRES LAW STUDENTS
Embassy of the United States Auditorium
November 14, 2008

Good morning. It is a great pleasure to receive you this morning at our Embassy. Before we start I would like to recognize Professor Roberto Cacheiro Frias for the initiative he’s taken in holding this event at our embassy, and I would like to congratulate all of you for participating in this event and for your interest in learning more about the world and the important role of the UN in international diplomacy.

As founding member and host country, the United States is committed to supporting the United Nations as an instrument to promote peace, security, freedom and human rights. Since its inception, the UN has worked for the nations around the world. We recognize the value of the United Nations as a strong institution that can help tackle the difficult challenges no nation can face on its own.

The United States has worked closely with Argentina during the past few years in its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in areas such as peace-keeping, UN reform and the nuclear issue in Iran. Argentina’s participation in the UN peace-keeping mission in Haiti and the exemplary conduct of its Armed Forces in situ have been fundamental in supporting hemispheric efforts to restore democracy and a certain measure of stability in the country.

I strongly believe in the role that you, as representatives of a new generation, have as future leaders in our global society. You are a priority for our embassy, and as such, I encourage you to visit our website to see the information and opportunities we are offering. I would also like to mention the importance of the bilateral Fulbright Commission and its university level education opportunities.  If you are interested in pursuing your studies further in the United States, please take a look at Fulbright’s website.  Our staff will provide you with more information on both our embassy’s and Fulbright’s websites.

Thank you once again for coming and I wish you the greatest success in the debate.
