REMARKS BY AMBASSADOR E. ANTHONY WAYNE NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATION
Embassy Courtyard
October 05, 2007
Congress and the President of the United States have called upon public officials and the people of the United States to observe National Hispanic Heritage Month with appropriate ceremonies, activities and programs. This month presents an opportunity to remember the achievements of the many Hispanic-Americans who have contributed to our lives through art, literature, science, sports, education, and government service.
Our Hispanic colleagues are making considerable contributions everyday to promote closer U.S.-Argentine ties. Your hard work helps this Mission to run more smoothly, helps us to identify emerging political, economic, and social leaders dedicated to building a stronger Argentina, and helps us to promote the U.S.’s and Argentina’s shared values of hard work, civil liberty, and economic opportunity. We are grateful and proud for the unique contributions that each of you make to this Mission.
National Hispanic Heritage Month is also an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural traditions of our Hispanic-American community. Here in Buenos Aires, our embassy community has a great opportunity to learn about many diverse cultural traditions. We are a community made up of many nationalities and heritages. Looking around at the participants in this festival, we see that our community includes individuals from Ecuador , Chile , Mexico, Puerto Rico , El Salvador , Guatemala , Honduras, and of course, Argentina.
In the president’s proclamation on National Hispanic Heritage Month, he called on Americans to celebrate the diversity that makes America stronger, and the many ways Hispanic Americans have enriched our Nation. During Hispanic Heritage Month, all of us who serve the U.S. Embassy in Argentina have a special opportunity to learn more about one another-- to share the spirit and richness of the Hispanic community serving in this Mission. Here in our embassy community we enjoy the rewards of cultural diversity every day, but today we focus on the rich traditions of our Hispanic Heritage.
Thank you for coming to join us as we share traditions, customs, and stories as a community.
