Ambassador Vilma Martinez visited Asociación Civil Sol Naciente in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Bajo Flores on occasion of the International Women’s Day, on March 8. Ambassador Martinez donated mattresses and PCs to help the organization build a computer center that will provide people attending daily, a valuable tool for learning and communication.

“I want to congratulate the women I’ve met today for their daily efforts to improve the lives of many women and children of the community” – said Ambassador Vilma Martinez.

Ambassador Martinez toured the center, and talked to the director Lidia Hernández and a group of women, mostly young women victims of domestic violence, who are taking advantage of the opportunity offered by Sol Naciente to them and their children to start a new life.

Also present at the event were representatives from U.S. company Fluor and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation in Argentina, who support and cooperate with Sol Naciente in several projects.

Sol Naciente was born ten years ago on the initiative of a nurse, Lidia Hernández. At present, Mrs. Hernández serves food to 120 families in the shanty town 1.11.14, provides  shelter to women victims of gender violence and runs a bakery where residents work and learn a new trade.  The shelter works with a group of psycohologists and social workers, specially trained for the type of treatment needed by residents. Over 40 people, including women and kids live in the shelter for an average of 8 months.
