AMBASSADOR WAYNE MET WITH THE "MOTHERS AGAINST PACO" AT THE CONVIVEN COMMUNITY CENTRE
September 27, 2007

Ambassador Wayne was deeply moved by the stories he heard from the leader of the group, María Rosa González, and the other mothers, who aim at setting up a regional network to better fight drug-lords ruining their children’s life. Rosa explained how she works to arrange specific treatment and hospitalization requirement for the children victimized by this addiction. She also dedicates significant effort to prevention, arranging healthy youth activities such as soccer and dance.

“I was profoundly expressed by the courage and dedication of these mothers, not only to help their children but the entire community,” said the Ambassador.
She and the other mothers present explained that the use of “paco” is still growing and the effect on the children and families in the community continue to be devastating. They said the needs are enormous.
Ambassador Wayne applauded their grassroots work and offered whatever useful assistance the Embassy could provide.

The “Mothers Against Paco,” also known as “Mothers for Life,” was formed in 2006 to fight addiction to paco, a highly-addictive and cheap drug made of cocaine production leftovers.
María Rosa González, a mother of four, succeeded in recovering her 19 year-old son, Jeremías, from addiction. These mothers refer to paco-addicts as "the living dead."
