U.S. AMBASSADOR TO IAEA ADDRESSES IRAN NUCLEAR ISSUE IN VIDEO CONFERENCE
November 8, 2006
U.S. Ambassador to the UN in Vienna, Gregory Schulte, said on Wednesday, November 8, that the U.S. and the rest of the international community are optimistic that consensus will be achieved in the UN to impose sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program.
Ambassador Schulte, who also represents the United States before the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), spoke for over an hour via video-conference to Argentine journalists at the U.S. Embassy on the efforts the world community is making to “induce Iran into making the right choice” regarding its compliance with international non-proliferation rules.
Ambassador Schulte also said that Argentina has played and continues to play an important role as a member of the IAEA board. “Your voice is very important,” he said. The fact that North Korea has agreed to return to the negotiating table after being slapped with sanctions proves that the UN should follow a similar approach regarding Iran, argued Ambassador Schulte. And he added he did not anticipate major changes in the U.S. foreign policy vis-à-vis the Iran issue in the aftermath of the midterm elections held on November 7.
