AMBASSADOR WAYNE VISITS SANTA FE AND PARANA
August 28, 2008
Ambassador Wayne visited Santa Fe and Parana on August 28 to present certificates to students that received scholarships from the Embassy. This was Ambassador Wayne´s first visit to both cities. He also met with Governor Binner of Santa Fe.
At ALICANA and APICANA, Ambassador Wayne awarded 30 scholarships for students of public high schools to study English for two years at the binational centers. The scholarships are part of the Sarmiento-Mann Program the embassy sponsors at the national level. Last June, the State Department announced an additional investment of 250,000 dollars to increase the number of scholarships to more than 1,000.
“To learn another language generates opportunities: the opportunity to travel and study in other countries is an experience that widens knowledge and develops confidence and leadership skills. It also helps build the main foundation of relations among nations: mutual understanding on the basis of interpersonal relations,” said Ambassador Wayne, who also congratulated ALICANA and APICANA authorities for their daily work on behalf of Argentine youth and to achieve a better understanding between the United States and Argentina.
Ambassador Wayne discussed with Santa Fe Governor Hermes Binner the possibility of expanding exchanges, both commercial and cultural/educational, between Santa Fe province and the United States.
“We agreed with Governor Binner to make all necessary efforts from the public sector to support the strengthening of relations between Santa Fe and my country,” said the Ambassador.
Ambassador Wayne also met with the leaders of Fundacion Proteger, and congratulated them for their environmentally sustainable programs for economic development, particularly those related to fisheries. Fundacion Proteger receives support form the Inter-American Foundation (IAF) an independent agency of the US Government.
“It is extremely gratifying to see how Fundacion Proteger applies environmentally sustainable principles at the same time it creates jobs for young women,” noted the Ambassador.
