AMBASSADOR WAYNE HIGHLIGHTS COOPERATION POTENTIAL BETWEEN SAN LUIS AND THE US
November 24, 2008
Ambassador Wayne visited the Universidad de La Punta and concluded on November 24 an official two-day visit to the province of San Luis.
The Ambassador congratulated University Director Alicia Bañuelos for the institution’s cooperation agreements with NASA and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The Ambassador met the winners of the latest edition of the Provincial Science Olympics, who will be traveling to the States as a result of the agreement with NASA. Under the agreement with NOAA, the University helps this U.S. agency check the accuracy of satellite rainfall measurements.
"Experiences like the one you will have make it possible for you to learn about other cultures, be ambassadors of your own country and strengthen existing ties of friendship between Argentina and the United States." – said the Ambassador to the students. "I congratulated Director Bañuelos for this NASA exchange program as I understand these initiatives are highly beneficial for the relationships between our two countries."
During a joint press conference with the University Director, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in education such as the agreement signed by Universidad de la Punta with private companies to build its high-tech & informatics facility. The Director also said the agreement with NASA was reached with help from Microsoft.
"Joint public-private efforts like this one are key to the relationship between our countries," said the Ambassador.
The Ambassador had dinner with Governor Rodriguez Saa and part of his cabinet.
"The Governor told me about his priorities for provincial development; especially about the emphasis on new IT training," said the Ambassador.
The Ambassador was very impressed with the free Wi-Fi program implemented by the provincial government across San Luis. Talking with people in La Carolina, the Ambassador saw how important these connectivity programs are for distant and small towns that can now be part of the global community.
In the afternoon, Ambassador Wayne visited the Fifth Air Brigade in Villa Reynolds and was given a tour of the base by Commander Mario Fernando Roca. Later on, in the city of Villa Mercedes, the Ambassador toured U.S. firm Procter & Gamble’s plant and learnt from company managers about their CSR program whereby corporate staff and other community members are trained to face emergencies together with the volunteer fire brigade "El Fortín" of Villa Mercedes.
"I am pleasantly surprised by the interest of the province in inserting itself into an increasingly globalized and competitive world. I believe that the possibilities of strengthening exchange between our Embassy and the province, be it in the areas of economy and trade or in politics and culture, are very important.” said the Ambassador.
"The nearly 500 U.S. companies based in the country not only provide quality jobs for more than 150,000 Argentines but are also becoming increasingly involved in CSR-related projects. It is important for all of us to support and promote these corporate activities that result in great benefit to the community,” said Ambassador Wayne.
