THE CENTRAL BANK OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARGENTINA, THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TREASURY, AND THE U.S. EMBASSY SIGN AGREEMENT ON THE PREVENTION AND DETECTION OF TERRORIST FINANCING
June 4, 2009
The President of the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic, Martín Redrado, and United States Ambassador to Argentina Earl Anthony Wayne, representing the U.S. Department of Treasury, today signed a bilateral technical assistance agreement focused on enhancing the prevention and detection of terrorism financing.
The document signed today has as a reference point other projects in development and initiatives implemented in prior years by both institutions. Along these lines, the Central Bank of the Republic of Argentina will support and participate actively in a regional program – the fourth annual U.S.-Latin America Private Sector Dialogue – promoted by the U.S. Department of Treasury. The objectives of this conference, which will take place in October 2009 in Buenos Aires, are to foment interaction and dialogue – “level the playing field” -- between the financial sectors of Latin America and the United States.
“The persistence and perseverance of the joint work carried out by the regulatory bodies of both Argentina and the United States are made evident in agreements such as the one signed today,” stated Central Bank President Martín Redrado.
“I am particularly pleased to sign an agreement to strengthen efforts against the financing of terrorism as my final act with the Argentine authorities, because I dedicated so much energy to this area after September 11, 2001,” commented Ambassador Wayne.
This Project also embodies the results of an extended period of analysis and evaluation of training needs that was conducted in Buenos Aires by technical teams from each country’s institutions. The Central Bank, in coordination with the Ministry of Justice, Security, and Human Rights, the National Commission on Securities, and the National Superintendence of Insurance, will participate in this project together with the United States Department of Treasury and the Embassy.
“This technical assistance project is a further example of our close bilateral coordination and commitment. The project also highlights the importance that regulators in both Argentina and the United States place on combating the scourge of international terrorism,” declared the Ambassador.
“The Agreement – which represents one more step forward in our long-term bilateral strategic cooperation -- demonstrates the commitment of the Central Bank and the Argentine Republic in working together in the fight against global crime,” emphasized Redrado.
