AMBASSADOR WAYNE TALKS ABOUT U.S. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS WITH ARGENTINE OBSERVERS
October 30, 2008

Ambassador Wayne hosted Argentine leaders October 30 in his residence for a special discussion of the presidential elections in the United States.  The group, which included provincial congressmen, political leaders, journalists, and researchers, will be observing the election on November 4.  The Argentines are participating in programs organized by institutions such as the Fundacion Universitaria del Rio de la Plata (FURP), the Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) and the Center of American Studies (CEA.)

"I am pleased to be able to host this meeting with you to express my best wishes for your upcoming trip to the U.S. to observe the presidential elections.  I am convinced it will be a unique experience for you as you experience first-hand the political dynamics in my country. Without a doubt, your trip will help deepen the understanding between our countries."

Following a presentation that focused on how the electoral college works and the critical role it is playing in the current presidential election, everyone present engaged in a conversation about some of the less known, but key developments and trends in U.S. presidential politics.  Several aspects of the election were highlighted as historic: the fact that either an African American or a woman will be President or Vice President, the record number of voters in this election, the early voting trend, the growing influence of the Hispanic vote, the surge in young voter interest, the use of internet in the campaign, among others.

"The Internet has played a key role in this presidential campaign motivating the American people and expanding their participation in these elections.  Likewise, the efforts of various social and political organizations have generated greater civic participation", said Ambassador Wayne responding to a question from the guests on this issue."
