US AMBASSADOR LAUNCHES FIRST OAS MODEL ASSEMBLY IN ARGENTINA
December 11, 2007

Ambassador Wayne launched on December 11 the first OAS Model Assembly in Argentina. The event marked the 25th Model OAS General Assembly worldwide.   Ambassador Wayne joined Vice Canciller Ambassador Roberto Garcia Moritan, OAS Director Irene Klinger, and Conciencia President Lia Rueda. “The United States has always been a strong supporter of the OAS and the positive role it plays in the region. It is our principal venue for multilateral engagement … [and] has been a key participant in fostering the wave of democracy that has swept over our hemisphere… The US Embassy is very pleased and proud to work with you and others as a sponsor of this important event”, Ambassador said.

Some 200 university students from Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru, and the United States are participating in the two-day program sponsored by the United States Embassy, Conciencia,  Asociacion Civil Universo Agora, and Fundacion Universitaria del Rio de la Plata.

The program is designed to increase awareness of the mission of the OAS and generate an understanding of the many factors that shape the foreign policies of OAS members.  The students are assigned to represent each of the 34 member states of the OAS to debate and defend the interests and policies of their assigned country on a wide range of current global issues.

“In just over two decades, the people of Latin America transcended what many assumed was an inescapable reality. They threw the dictators out of power and created democracies. Since its foundation, the OAS is a symbol of humankind’s highest values: liberty, dignity, and government by law”, Ambassador said.
