SMITHSONIAN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS MANAGER LECTURES ON EMERGENCY PLANNING AND SECURITY IN MUSEUMS
October 8-9, 2007
Bayne Rector, disaster preparedness manager of the Smithsonian Institution in the United States will be the keynote speaker during the two-day seminar on “Disaster Preparedness and Security in Museums” that will be held in Buenos Aires on October 8-9, 2007.
The seminar will take place at Sarmiento 362. This activity is organized by the Argentine Chapter of the International Council of Museums, the Cultural Office of the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires and the Archive and Historic Museum of the Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires “Dr. Arturo Jauretche”.
Mr. Rector and other local experts will talk about current emergency plans and security in museums and the different ways to improve them.

Bayne Rector-Biography
Career began in the United States Air Force as an aircraft Crew Chief in the Presidential 89th Military Airlift Wing located at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington DC. Mr. Rector next served as the staff chemist, safety coordinator, aircraft restoration specialist and disaster preparedness specialist with the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum’s Garber Facility from 1978-2002. During this time, Mr. Rector wrote a book called Chemical Processing Specifications that outlined chemical techniques used in the restoration and preservation of modern museum objects. Mr. Rector holds certificates in wastewater treatment, hazardous waste and spill control management. In addition to a BS in Chemistry and graduate work in Materials Science Engineering, Mr. Rector holds certificates from the US Department of Homeland Security on Weapons of Mass Destruction, Bioterrorism, Training for Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management. Mr. Rector currently holds the position of Disaster Preparedness Manager for the Smithsonian Institution and is responsible for the production and maintenance of the Smithsonian’s Disaster Management Program Master Plan and all separate and specific disaster plans held by Smithsonian museums, research complexes, restoration facilities and critical offices. Mr. Rector is responsible for the training of Smithsonian staff on disaster preparedness issues and is a member of the Smithsonian’s Emergency Operations Center. Mr. Rector serves as the principal spokesman and representative for the Smithsonian’s Disaster Management Program.
