AMBASSADOR WAYNE VISITS THE PROVINCE OF MISIONES
September 6-7, 2007
Ambassador Wayne visited the city of Posadas, September 6 where he met with political leaders and former U.S. Embassy exchange program participants.
Ambassador Wayne’s first visit to the city aims at fostering ties between the region and the United States and to get acquainted with provincial leaders.
Ambassador Wayne met with Governor Carlos Rovira and Senator Maurice Closs at the governor’s office. The Ambassador and the Governor talked about current conditions in the province and the potential for expanding business, educational and cultural exchanges between Misiones and the United States.
Ambassador Wayne also met with Vice-Governor Pablo Tschirsch and a group of national and provincial legislators and covered the economic and political outlook of the province.
The Ambassador concluded his meetings by highlighting the possibilities of strengthening trade relations between Misiones and the United States – the main destination for its local products such as tea, wood and tobacco. Provincial authorities also mentioned that the significant growth in tourism includes U.S. investment mainly in the hotel sector and that they expect such investment to increase. "There is great potential for growth of U.S. tourism in the province," said Ambassador Wayne.
To foster people-to-people ties, the Ambassador also met with former scholarship recipients Luis del Federico and Gonzalo Peltzer who traveled to the U.S. under Embassy auspices to share ideas with their American counterparts in their areas of specialization. The Ambassador listened to their experiences and views on national and provincial developments and underscored the importance of people-to-people relations in increasing understanding among nations. "I held interesting conversations with provincial authorities on the ways we can strengthen youth exchanges between the province of Misiones and the United States,” said the Ambassador.
In the afternoon, the Ambassador traveled to Puerto Iguazú he will meet authorities from Fundación Vida Silvestre, which represents the World Wildlife Fund in Argentina, and visit Iguazú National Park.
