To reach many outstanding students who do not have access to quality English training, the US Embassy has had the privilege of launching the English Access Microscholarship Program which enables eligible students to attend English courses at various binational centers across Argentina.

This worldwide program was started by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of English Language Programs, in 2004 and since its inception 70,000 students have participated in it from over 85 countries.

Access provides a foundation of English language skills to talented 14-18 year-olds from disadvantaged sectors through after school classes and intensive sessions for two years.  It also gives students an opportunity to gain an appreciation for U.S. culture and democratic values.  It is the hope that graduates will successfully contribute to the socio-economic development of their countries, and improve their chances of taking part in U.S. educational and exchange programs.  This high profile, public diplomacy initiative demonstrates the United States’ dedication to education and cultural understanding.  We were thrilled to have the opportunity to adopt this program in Argentina.

In 2011 a total of 720 scholarship students will participate in Access at binational centers in 13 cities throughout Argentina: Buenos Aires, Rosario, Salta, Mendoza, Santa Fe, San Francisco (Cordoba), Comodoro Rivadavia, San Rafael, Santiago del Estero, Cordoba, Tucuman, Parana and Santa Rosa (La Pampa).

As Argentina continues to emphasize the importance of English teaching, it is our goal to spread the Access program to as many BNCs and students as possible via both State Department funding and cost-sharing with local and US-based companies. We have been fortunate to receive offers of support from many US and Argentine companies, such as Coca Cola, DIRECTV, Kimberly Clark Argentina, Globe Metales, Ketchum PR, Clorox, IBM, Intel, Alsea, Oxbow, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Pepsico, Hilton, AES, Bridgestone and Manpower.
