AMBASSADOR WAYNE ATTENDS MICROSOFT’S 2009 LATIN AMERICA RESEARCH SUMMIT OPENING CEREMONY
May 13, 2009

On May 13, Ambassador Wayne attended the opening ceremony of Microsoft’s 2009 Latin America Research Summit, held in Pilar.  The annual summit attracted over 200 regional leaders in Innovation and Research and Development among scientists and faculty members.  The theme of the summit was “Creative Innovation Through Investigation and Research as Engines of Social, Economic and Scientific Development in Latin America.”

The event featured President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who in her remarks to the prestigious audience highlighted the similitude between President Obama’s and her own vision for bridging the digital gap, as well as her recent announcement of a digital agenda for the country. Also present were Daniel Scioli, Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires, , and Science and Technology Minister Lino Barañao.

Ambassador Wayne praised Microsoft’s initiative to organize such a prominent event and for its decision to keep investing in the Techological Access and Dreamspark programs over a three-year period to support digital inclusion along these themes, the major recipient being 400,000 students from technical schools.

“I am consistently impressed by the incredibly rich pool of qualified, talented, and creative Argentines who develop and support many U.S. technology and content companies.  I am equally impressed by Microsoft’s announcement to invest in the Technological Access and Dreamspark programs, which will reach 400,000 students in the country, for an average of 1,000 to 1,500 Argentine pesos per student. It’s a clear sign of that company’s commitment and success, especially in light of the current challenges in the world economy,”  the Ambassador stated.
