AMBASSADOR WAYNE IN MENDOZA
August 16-17, 2007
U.S. Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne concluded on August 17 a two-day visit to the city of Mendoza where he met a broad range of political, business and social leaders.
This is the second time the Ambassador has visited the province of Mendoza since he arrived in Argentina in November 2006.
Ambassador Wayne visited foster home and school “Hogar Escuela Eva Perón” where he donated children’s classics and underscored the importance of investing in young people in Argentina.
“I believe strongly that helping young people in Argentina is one of the most important things we can do, so my Embassy staff is working hard to reach out to children like you,” said the Ambassador while presenting the donation.
On Thursday night, the Ambassador spoke about bilateral relations between Argentina and the United States at Fundación Universitaria Río de la Plata headquarters in Mendoza. Also present at the gathering at the Park Hyatt Hotel were Mendoza’s Vice-Governor, Juan Carlos Jaliff, mayoral candidates César Biffi (Concertación) and Omar De Marchi (Democratic Party) as well as Vice-Governor candidate Cristian Racconto.
“Argentina and the U.S. have similar views on many issues and it is on the basis of this convergence of views and mutual interest that we are moving the bilateral relation forward,” said Ambassador Wayne.
The Ambassador met yesterday with Governor Julio Cobos and accompanied U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings during her visit to the province. He also visited the training school for pilots of the Brigada Pampa (Pampa Air Force Team) at El Plumerillo airport.
Ambassador Wayne also met with authorities of Mendoza’s Food Bank and congratulated its President, Bernardo Zunino for the community work they are doing with the private sector through 42 social organizations to provide food to more than 8,800 children and dietary education to their families. The Ambassador also visited “Fundación Mediterránea” and had lunch with National Senator Celso Jaque. The Ambassador had previously met the Senator at the Americas Competitiveness Forum hosted in Atlanta in June.
