THE UNITED STATES WILL COOPERATE WITH ARGENTINA IN SEISMIC MONITORING ACTIVITY

During a ceremony held at the Foreign Ministry March 9, US Ambassador Lino Gutiérrez and Deputy Foreign Minister Roberto Garcia Moritan signed an agreement intended to broaden the scope of an existing 1987 agreement to establish and operate a seismic monitoring station in Paso Flores, province of Río Negro, to support the International Monitoring System (IMS) being installed around the world by signatories to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban treaty (CTBT). Under this agreement, the US will send experts to ensure the station is compliant with IMS standards, provide new technology, upgrade existing equipment, and train the staff of Argentina's National Seismic Forecast Institute.
