Aimee Mann in Buenos Aires
August 13, 2009
On August 13, American guitarist, singer, and songwriter Aimee Mann met backstage with fellow Berklee College of Music alumni and embassy staff following a packed concert at the Gran Rex Theater in Buenos Aires. This event is part of the U.S. Embassy’s Music Outreach Program which aims to connect American musicians with Argentine citizens. The six Argentine guests enjoyed a 15-minute private meeting with the singer, discussing their experiences studying at Berklee and the work they are doing in Argentina now. Berklee alumni in attendance included German Nuñez, Fernando Isella, Juan Pablo Alcaro, Santiago Candegabe, Diego Voloschin, and Ramiro Flores.
The concert brought together an enthusiastic audience of all ages, many of whom have followed the singer’s career since the 1980s. Mann won her greatest public recognition in 1999 for the eight songs she contributed to the soundtrack of the movie Mangolia. The concert featured hit songs from the movie, such as Academy Award and Grammy-nominated song “Save Me,” as well as other hits like "One" and "Voices Carry." Mann, whose songs are characterized by a slow, smooth sound with lyrics that tend to be reflective, melancholy, and nostalgic, has been called "more indie than indie." Last night's concert kicked off Mann’s first ever South American tour, which will include a stop in Santiago, Chile next.
