AMBASSADOR WAYNE AND BASEBALL PLAYER CANDY MALDONADO MEET SPORTS JOURNALISTS
February 12, 2009
On February 12, Ambassador Wayne received a group of sports journalists to talk with American baseball figure Candy Maldonado – famous Major Baseball League player and baseball analyst and commentator for ESPN. Maldonado's visit to Argentina is sponsored by the US Embassy with an active program in Buenos Aires and Salta, including free baseball clinics, the opening of the Argentine Baseball League Annual Tournament, and sports promotion among youth.
During the meeting, Maldonado highlighted the positive effects of baseball in youth and talked about the popularity of baseball in other Latin American countries. Journalists discussed with him the current challenges for baseball and its development in Argentina and the region. Ambassador Wayne talked about his own experience with baseball, and mentioned the programs the Embassy will carry out with Candy during his visit.
“Sports of all kinds, and in this case baseball, are a valuable tool for the development of youth potential that excites a sense of healthy competition and team work. I celebrate that many young people can share with Candy something of this sport so popular in my country,” said Ambassdor Wayne.
