EMBASSY DONATION TO “LUCHEMOS PARA UNA INFANCIA FELIZ Y CON ESPERANZA”
August 7, 2009

In honor of International Children's Day, Chargé d' Affaires Thomas Kelly and Lieutenant Colonel Gregory Green, from the United States Military Group visited  children at Ciudad Oculta and donated tables, chairs, kitchen equipment, art and school supplies to the non-profit organization “Luchemos para una Infancia Feliz y con Esperanza” (L.I.F.E.) on August 7.  “Our donation is a gesture of our support for the important work undertaken by L.I.F.E. and its volunteers every day." -- said U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly.
The funds for the donation came from U.S. Southern Command's humanitarian assistance program through the U.S. Embassy’s Military Group. L.I.F.E. is a non-profit, civil society organization led by Liliana Mocoroa and dedicated to providing healthy social activities to children living in the poor neighborhood of Ciudad Oculta.  L.I.F.E. volunteers regularly offer educational and recreational activities to children who attend the childcare center run by Maria Rosa Gonzales, the U.S. Embassy's nominee for the 2008 International Woman of  Courage award, as well as the community center "Ejercito Celestial" and the soup kitchens, "Los Angelitos", "La Unión hace la Fuerza" and "Las Horas Felices."  Many of the volunteers are university students.
The U.S. Embassy is proud to partner with L.I.F.E. as they work to make the future for the children of Ciudad Oculta brighter. Many children who participate in L.I.F.E.'s after-school programs offer healthy alternatives to children who may be at higher risk of suffering violence and drug abuse.
