U.S. LIBRARIANS DISCUSS INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ACCESS STANDARDS

November 28-30, 2007

Library of Congress cataloging experts, Dr. Barbara Tillett and Ms. Ana Cristán were joined by U.S. Embassy Buenos Aires IRC Coordinator Graciela Spedalieri in their participation in Latin America's 3rd International Cataloging Conference hosted this year by the National Library of Argentina.  Dr. Tillett introduced new international information organization rules that will incorporate every country's cultural legacy into the worldwide movement to create a common code that will ultimately facilitate the sharing of knowledge and intellectual works across borders and languages.  Ms. Cristán and Ms. Spedalieri gave practical advice on how to prepare for the changes that will ultimately make accessible through the Internet cultural treasures stored in libraries throughout the hemisphere. Dr. Tillett and Ms. Cristán also trained Argentina National Library staff on new international cataloging norms.

The U.S. Library of Congress is one of the leaders in the effort to expand access to the world's national libraries.  Both Dr. Tillett and Ms. Cristán participated in the planning, organization, and running of the 5 regional IFLA Meetings of Experts on International Cataloging Code held worldwide from 2003-2007.
