Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly spoke at the opening ceremony of a working conference organized by WorldSys and Marteau & Asociados on September 3. “Cooperation between the United States and Argentina in the areas of money laundering and terrorist financing is excellent and we have enjoyed a close coordination at the international groups like OAS and GAFISUD. U.S. Departments of Homeland Security, Justice and the Treasury have worked closely with their Argentine counterparts. These agencies have also collaborated with Argentine judicial authorities in investigations and through the exchange of information”. – said Mr. Kelly.
Mr. Kelly spoke about the new challenges faced by the international community in the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing both at structural level and under the current global financial crisis conditions. Mr. Kelly highlighted Argentina-U.S. joint work at the G-20 and other multilateral bodies. Mr. Kelly also announced the recent technical assistance agreement signed by the United States and the Central Bank of Argentina to enhance prevention and detection of terrorism financing.
“The singing of the agreement was one of the last actions performed by Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne in his capacity as U.S. Ambassador to Argentina. I am convinced that this project will serve as a starting point for an even closer cooperation and coordination between our governments”. – said Mr. Kelly during his speech.
