U.S. EMBASSY-HOSTED CASA VELA GUESTS DANCE ON-STAGE WITH CINDY LAUPER
November 21, 2008

Deputy Chief of Mission Thomas Kelly hosted kids from Casa Vela at the Cindy Lauper concert at Luna Park on November 21.  Ms. Lauper met the group backstage and later invited the five children from Casa Vela to join her on stage for two full numbers.  The kids danced and sang along to Ms. Lauper’s songs onstage and Ms. Lauper had them introduce themselves, as the crowd roared.

Casa Vela is a space for children ages 6 to 16 who are HIV positive located at Monteagudo 239 in the City of Buenos Aires.  Asociación Civil Alfonso Farias purchased the building with funds acquired from the sale of t-shirts to participants in their 2Km x Sida walkathons and with donations from several companies who collaborated in the project.

Casa Vela provides the following benefits to these children:

·       Emotional and psychological support.

·       Psychological and social support for their families.

·       Workshops on prevention.

·       Art, music and computer workshops and academic support.

·       Meals (lunch and afternoon snack).

·       Recreation (sports).

Casa Vela’s objective is the social integration of these children, keeping in mind that it’s important to encourage recognition and tolerance of the community towards this extremely vulnerable population.

Asociación Civil Alfonso Farias will be holding this year’s edition of their 2Km x Sida walkathon on December 7.
