CHARGÉ D’AFFAIRES I.A. ALEXANDER FEATHERSTONE CLOSES STRATEGIC THREAT INTERDICTION SYMPOSIUMA
July 31, 2009

Chargé d’Affaires i.a. Alexander Featherstone closed on July 31 the Strategic Threat Interdiction Symposium organized by the United States Military Group and the U.S. Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The symposium held July 27-31 under the title: “Fight Against Transnational Complex Crime” gathered representatives from Argentine Customs and Border Guard, Federal Police of the province of Cordoba; customs representatives from Uruguay, Treasury and Specialized Technical Unit representatives from Paraguay and speakers from United States Joint Special Operations University and Naval War College.

“Events like this are extremely helpful to strengthen regional cooperation in the fight against the threats and challenges posed by transnational crime, drug-trafficking and trafficking in persons and provide a valuable opportunity to exchange information and experiences among our governments and security forces.” – said Chargé d’Affaires i.a. Featherstone.

Seminar topics included the future threat of transnational crime, criminal organizations as networks, networks and other structures, links to terrorism, trafficking in persons, money-laundering, intra- and inter-governmental cooperation and the importance of cooperation among agencies.

One of the main objectives of this important training for leaders is to bring together a group of regional law-enforcement partners from Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay to strengthen and enhance professional contacts, discuss key issues and share practices and experiences to improve the way key security and law-enforcement issues are dealt with.

“The criminal organizations that we face are complex and transcend international boundaries. Our approaches to combating these organizations must be based on sound strategies and grounded in both intra-governmental and international cooperation.” – said Mr. Featherstone and added: “In today’s globalized world, our ability to work together is essential to successfully coordinate the most effective investigative strategies and enforce the strongest laws available to us.”

Following the meeting, Mr. Featherstone handed out attendance certificates to participants and thanked them for their valuable contribution to cooperation between our nations.
