AMBASSADOR WAYNE GRANTS SCHOLARSHIPS IN CORDOBA
March 18, 2009

Ambassador Wayne visited on March 18 the Argentine-American binational center IICANA in the city of Cordoba to grant 10 new scholarships as part of the Sarmiento-Mann program sponsored by the U.S. Embassy to help youth with no financial resources study English.

“This program sponsored by the Embassy is another example of the many values shared by the United States and Argentina like the importance both countries give to education as a key support for democracy.” – said the Ambassador.

The Sarmiento-Mann program has been designed by the Embassy so that more public school secondary students have the opportunity to study English at BNCs throughout Argentina. In 2008, 160 kids received scholarships.

“Education is fundamental to democracy and person- to-person relations are at the core of ties among our peoples. I congratulate IICANA for the great work they carry out every day and I reaffirm the commitment of my Embassy to youth investment in Argentina, in this case in the field of English teaching.”— said Ambassador Wayne.

The Ambassador also met with the President of Cordoba’s Argentine American Chamber of Commerce Tomas Capdevilla and talked about the economic situation of the province and the ways in which Argentine and U.S. governments can cooperate to face the global crisis. Mr. Capdevilla also told the Ambassador about AmCham-Cordoba plans to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Ambassador Wayne underscored the interest of the Embassy to continue its support of AmCham-Cordoba’s initiatives.

During his visit to IICANA, Ambassador Wayne also talked with a group of alumni of different Fulbright programs who shared their experiences in the United States with the Ambassador. “Person-to-person ties are the basis of relations between our peoples and Córdoba has a long tradition of fruitful exchanges with my country that we expect to strengthen and enhance.”—concluded the Ambassador.
