September 16, 2008
On September 16, Ambassador Wayne participated in an event for Hyatt Hotels and Resorts that was organized by the Commercial Section of the Embassy. The event highlighted 10 Hyatt properties in the United States and was attended by travel and tourism industry representatives and press. The Vice President of Sales for Hyatt Corporation, Mr. Kevin Kelly, led the U.S. delegation, which was comprised of Managers from the fifteen Hyatt properties. Hyatt is one of the world’s premier hotel companies with locations in 45 countries that combined employ nearly 90,000 men and women. Hyatt operates two locations in Argentina, the Palacio Duhau-Park Hyatt, in the heart of Buenos Aires and the Hyatt Hotel Mendoza.
The Ambassador commented that Argentina and the United States can appreciate the positive effects that tourism has on a local economy as each offers beautiful destinations that range from serene mountains to gorgeous beaches, from vibrant cities to historic towns. He mentioned that tourism plays a vital role in promoting a better understanding of others cultures, histories and people, a key element that helps bring countries closer together.
In 2007, 266,971 Argentines traveled to the United States, a 25.9% increase from 2006 while 300,000 North Americans traveled to Argentina, a 23.1% increase for the same period. In general, the tourism industry employs nearly a million people directly in Argentina and 7.5 million in the United States. Travel and tourism in the United States rank among the top three sectors in terms of revenue in each of the 50 states.
