US Conductor Meets with Argentine Youth
August 27, 2009
On August 27, US conductor David Handel met with students and teachers at the music conservatory “Julián Aguirre” in Banfield. Mr. Handel, a current resident of Bolivia, has achieved an extraordinary reputation as one of the most respected and innovative conductors in Latin America. Among other prestigious accomplishments, he has been a fellow of the famous Fulbright Program twice, is a laureate of the Chicago Artists International Program, and has received numerous awards including the UNESCO National Prize in Culture. Founded in 1951, the “Julián Aguirre” conservatory provides music education on a variety of instruments and disciplines to students. The school boasts over 2,800 alumni. At the conservatory, Mr. Handel discussed his professional experience as a conductor with over 100 students and staff members, stating that being a conductor is very much an exercise in psychology. “Members of the orchestra are each their own worlds, and as a conductor I have to bring those worlds together to create a unified sound.”
