AMBASSADOR WAYNE AND EMBASSY STAFF HELP BUILD A HOME
March 14, 2009
Ambassador Wayne and his wife Pamela Wayne accompanied by 13 Embassy officers and their relatives participated on March 14 in a volunteer service day in the city of Lujan, province of Buenos Aires, to help build a home on behalf of Habitat for Humanity–Argentina.
As part of an “Embassy Team” organized by Habitat for Humanity–Argentina, the South African Ambassador to Argentina, Peter Goosen and his family also participated in the volunteer service day together with U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly.
"Becoming a volunteer always makes me happy and proud, mainly when it comes to building houses that are vital both for human and community development.” – said Ambassador Wayne.
Ambassador Wayne and the volunteers talked with the recipient family who also participated in the construction day and visited two completed houses learning how much homeowners valued the chance of having a house thanks to Habitat for Humanity–Argentina. The Ambassador congratulated the families for teaming up with Habitat and helping promote both human and neighborhood community development. The Ambassador also congratulated Habitat for Humanity–Argentina representatives for the great work carried out in the country. Since its inception as a civil organization in Argentina in April 2002, Habitat has completed 83 houses and has also extended or restored another 120.
“The greatest accomplishment of Habitat work is to bring together the efforts of recipient families with those of people who wish to collaborate in one way or the other with human and community development. It is exciting to see how these joint efforts make the dream of a home of one’s own come true.” – said Ambassador Wayne.
About Habitat for Humanity – Argentina: Much More Than Houses
Habitat for Humanity –Argentina is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry that offers families in need opportunities to work a solution to their housing problem providing them with free in-depth knowledge on housing issues while promoting both human and community development.
Housing solutions are always adjusted to local and family needs in particular. To this aim, different methods have been designed including loans for complete houses (with of without land), stepwise restorations, disaster response, assistance in land legalization and rentals with guardianship. Habitat for Humanity lends no-profit, no-interest mortgage loans to its beneficiary families. Habitat loans are long-term loans and installment payments are destined to a Rotative Fund to serve more families. To find housing solutions, families team up with other families and volunteers.
