AMBASSADOR WAYNE VISITS ROSARIO CITY
July 19, 2007
Ambassador Wayne visited the city of Rosario July 18-19 for the second time since his arrival in Argentina in November 2006.
The Ambassador attended a dinner offered by General Motors (GM) global CEO Rick Wagoner, along with the top executives of the firm and their local partners. Mr. Wagoner announced at GM´s plant on the outskirts of Rosario a 400 million-dollar investment plan for MERCOSUR.
In Argentina, this new investment includes manufacturing of a new mid-sized car which is estimated to create about 1,500 new jobs. The Ambassador and GM employees welcomed the visit of President Kirchner and Mr. Wagoner’s announcement of the new investment. The Ambassador told participants, “This announcement is a clear sign of trust and an acknowledgement of Argentine capacity since, as you all know, GM is a great company and a global leader in the automotive industry.”
Ambassador Wayne had lunch with Rosario´s stock exchange authorities and congratulated them on their commitment to regional development. Also present was Rosario´s mayor Miguel Lifszchitz. Stock market authorities presented a series of plans for bolstering local infrastructure growth and expanding the Argentine futures market (ROFEX). The Ambassador, the mayor, stock market authorities and members of civil society discussed the best ways in which the public and private sectors can work together to develop educational and infrastructure projects that will bring about equitable growth. “I was very impressed by the dedication of city leaders to strengthening Rosario´s competitiveness both at the regional and international level,” Ambassador Wayne said.
Ambassador Wayne concluded his visit by highlighting that the Embassy will work hard to continue to strengthen the already active economic, trade and cultural relations between Rosario and the US.
