AMBASSADOR WAYNE MEETS MINISTER DEBORA GIORGI
February 25, 2009
Ambassador Wayne met on February 25 with Minister of Production Debora Giorgi at Ministry headquarters. This was their first meeting since Minister Giorgi was appointed in November 2008. Ambassador Wayne congratulated Ms. Giorgi on her appointment.
During the meeting, the officials explored mechanisms to increase bilateral tourism, which has a significant impact on job creation both in the United States and Argentina.
Ambassador Wayne and Minister Giorgi dicussed several aspects of bilateral relations and the cooperation between the Embassy and Argentina in areas pertaining to the Ministry of Production, among them agriculture, bilateral trade and investments, especially Argentina´s great potential for development in biofuels and the country´s competitiveness in new agricultural technologies that are of mutual interest.
They also discussed other important issues in the bilateral agricultural agenda. Minister Giorgi particularly addressed the US Department of Agriculture approval for lemon and beef imports from Argentina, among other key issues. Ambassdor Wayne highlighted the US government´s interest in solving these questions and expressed interest in advancing the approval process for beef and poultry exports from the United States to Argentina.
The Minister and the Ambassador expressed satisfaction at the significant increase in bilateral trade, which reached 12 billion dollars in 2008.
“I had a very good first meeting with Minister Giorgi. Within the framework of the global economic crisis, and looking forward to the G-20 and Americas Summit in which both Argentina and the United States will participate in April, we agreed to share experiences and communicate permanently to talk about our priorities for economic recovery, including the need to maintain high levels of international trade,” said the Ambasador.
