Ambassador Martinez with Nilda Garre

Argentine Minister of Defense Nilda Garre received U.S. Ambassador Vilma Martinez February 5 to discuss international relief efforts in Haiti. Ambassador Martinez described the extensive United States contributions of relief materials, transportation, medical assistance and contributions to the maintenance of public order, noting that U.S. humanitarian assistance since the earthquake now totals $464 million.  Ambassador Martinez was pleased to hear further details on Argentina's plans to maintain and augment its crucial assistance to Haiti.

“Argentina's military hospital in Port-au-Prince remains important and was for a time the only functioning medical facility in the capital," said the Ambassador.  "My government is pleased to have provided support to this impressive Argentine operation and we commend Argentina's selfless volunteers and soldiers."

“Argentina has played a vital role in providing medical care, maintaining  public order, and facilitating humanitarian relief since the terrible earthquake in Haiti almost four weeks ago. I appreciate the opportunity that this meeting with Minister Garre gives us to communicate and coordinate regarding our important missions in Haiti," said Ambassador Martinez.
