June 25, 2009

Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly received a group of 24 Argentine young leaders

Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly received on June 25 a group of 24 outstanding Argentine youth who will participate in an intensive political leadership program sponsored the Argentine Fulbright Commission and the University of Massachusetts from July 10th to August 10th. This program also includes trips to Boston, Washington and other cities where fellows will visit important local and national government centers, NGOs and Think-tanks.

“I wish these young leaders much success with this program and am certain that in addition to gaining knowledge and practical skills on leadership and problem solving they will be true Argentine Ambassadors while in the United States.” – said Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Kelly during the ceremony.

The grant covers all costs for participants in the program. The 24 participants are graduates from different public and private universities coming form different cities around the country like Córdoba, Rosario and Buenos Aires, among others and were selected among 100 candidates for their outstanding professional and academic backgrounds.

The participants took a previous one-week course on the United States given by two American professors.

*About the Young Leaders Program

Since its inception in 2006, the Young Leaders Program sponsored by the Fulbright Commission and the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute, has selected between 20 to 24 young leaders to participate each year. During four weeks, participants will study public politics, learn about the role of political leadership both in and out of government, create alternatives and learn how to deal with social and economic critical issues. Using seminars, case studies, group projects and visits with policy practitioners, the Young Leadership Program seeks to bring together theory, observation, and actual practice to help young leaders develop problem solving skills.

Before saying goodbye to the young leaders, Mr. Kelly congratulated them for their performance, wished them good luck in the trip, emphasized the enriching experience of this exchange and told them they will certainly be excellent Argentine Ambassadors while in the United States.
