AMBASSADOR GUTIERREZ BIDS FAREWALL TO FULBRIGTH TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS
November 18, 2005
The Ambassador of the United States, Lino Gutierrez, met with 2005’s class of Fulbright English Teaching Assistants to bid them farewell before they return to the US. The Fulbright Teaching Assistantship Program aims to strengthen English language instruction at Argentine educational institutions by establishing a native speaker presence. It is also part of a larger Fulbright initiative to reach groups involved in basic education such as teaching English. The participants just finished an 8 month program where they were assigned as language learning assistants in various universities located in the provinces of Argentina. Their responsibilities included teaching between 15-18 hours per week, sharing American culture, preparing classroom activities and encouraging students to communicate in English, although many participants went beyond the call of duty and engaged in a number of extra-curricular activities such as giving presentations on the US system of higher education, organizing English conversation clubs and giving presentations at the bi-national centers in the provinces. Since the program’s inception the number of participants has grown each year as evidence of its success and this year is no exception. This meeting between the Ambassador and the ETAs provided an opportunity to recognize and thank 2005’s Teaching Assistants for their excellent work and contribution to the program’s objectives.
