AMBASSADOR FRECHETTE HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF FREE TRADE AND GLOBALIZATION
December 5, 2006
Globalization has reshaped the world and the way countries relate, and free trade is the main force behind it, Ambassador Myles R. Frechette said in a press conference at the US Embassy on Tuesday, December 5.
Ambassador Frechette explored prospects for the Doha round and the future of regional trade relations in the aftermath of the November 7 midterm elections in the United States. He said that although there is little hope of a free trade area for the whole of the Americas materializing in the short term, the U.S. might seek to harmonize all existing agreements in order to better coordinate the region’s trade relations.
During his two-day stay in Buenos Aires, Mr. Frechette, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Colombia 1994-97 and to Cameroon 1983-87, lectured to university students and professors on the importance of free trade and regional integration.
