THE AMERICAS COMPETITIVENESS FORUM OPENS IN ATLANTA
August 18, 2008
 

On August 18, the first day of the 2008 Americas Competitiveness Forum, Argentina was represented by a large delegation of government leaders, hosted by Ambassadors Wayne and Timerman. 

U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez opened the Forum to discuss solutions to challenges for economic development, especially in the areas of transportation and logistics, education, development of renewable energy resources, and initiatives for travel and tourism.

With the Presidents of Colombia, El Salvador and Guatemala listening, Secretary Gutierrez introduced the first panel that included Daniel Fernandez Canedo, Senior Editor for Clarin newspaper, which explored the media perspective on “The Global Image of the Americas” before an audience of 650 attendees from 30 countries.  Other panelists included Alberto Padilla, Anchor on CNN en Español.  The presentations focused on how the rest of the world views the Western Hemisphere and the Americas in general, particularly on doing business in the region.

The Ambassadors and the Argentina delegation also called on the Governor of Georgia Sonny Perdue at the State House.  Later, Governor Jaque and FLACMA President Julio Pereyra spoke as panelists during the plenary session “Local Economic Competitiveness: Mayors’ Perspective.”
