AMBASSADOR HOSTS A RECEPTION FOR THE WORLD FORESTRY CONGRESS

On October 21, Ambassador Vilma Martinez, introduced the head of the U.S. Forest Service, Tom Tidwel. In her speech, the Ambassador said that fortunately there are many organizations involved with the issue. She also expressed her appreciation for the fact that many of these organizations are represented in the United States delegation, comprising representatives of government agencies, environmental organizations, private industries, and universities among others.
While presenting the Chief of the Forest Service of the United States, Tom Tidwel, Ambassador Martinez said, "The World Forestry Congress presents a great opportunity for countries, by giving them a framework for exploring the challenge of balancing the needs of people with forest ecosystems throughout the world.
Ambassador Martinez said that data from the United States Forest Service now manages over 77 million hectares of federally owned forests and pastures, which provides technical assistance for private lands spanning over 500 million hectares, in order to control invasive species and fire. The U.S. Forest Service also has one of the largest research programs in the world.
