AMBASSADOR WAYNE AND EMBASSY STAFF VOLUNTEER AT FOOD BANK
January 19, 2009

Ambassador Wayne, his wife Pam, and more than 20 Embassy officers and family members did volunteer work at the Fundacion Banco de Alimentos on January 19. Ambassador Wayne and his staff helped process and organize food the Foundation distributes daily to more than 400 soup kitchens in the city of Buenos Aires and the Greater Buenos Aires.

Since 1994, the day commemorating Martin Luther King is not only a holiday, but a day in which hundreds of thousands of Americans work as volunteers for the benefit of their communities. In keeping with his remarks on the importance of community participation in the nation’s renewal, President-Elect Obama has made a special call for all Americans to get involved in community work as a sign of their will for change in the eve of the new administration’s inauguration ceremony. Former State Secretary Colin Powell, honorary co-chairman of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, announced the volunteering initiative, called "Renew America Together,", through which the President-Elect seeks to revitalize volunteer work, like serving food to the homeless, cleaning schools and communities, or helping marginalized youth and aged people.

“For us who are far away from home, it is doubly moving to dedicate our work to help our Argentine brothers who need it the most. We are very happy to be helping here in Argentina while President-Elect Obama participates today in volunteer activities in Washington ," the Ambassador said.
