AMBASSADOR WAYNE MEETS WITH MINISTER OF JUSTICE AND SECURITY FERNANDEZ
November 14, 2008
Ambassdor Wayne met with Minister of Justice, Security and Human Rights Anibal Fernandez on November 14. The discussion focused on Argentina's ongoing efforts to confront trafficking and illicit drugs as well as trafficking in persons.
Minister Fernandez provided information on increasing Government efforts against both challenges. Ambassador Wayne described recent collaboration among officials of both governments to develop new procedures for protecting intellectual property in Argentina in accordance with international obligations. The two also discussed the October 2008 recommendations of the multilateral Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to take preventive measures against supporting terrorism eminating from Iran.
“Yesterday's successful operation against international drug traffickers was a success for the Federal Police, but also the result of sustained and close collaboration between hard-working law enforcement officials from our two countries. U.S.-Argentina cooperation is essential to confronting regional challenges including drug trafficking and human trafficking, and I look forward to even more successful future efforts. I was very pleased to learn from Minister Fernandez about the increasing success of Argentine security forces in rescuing victims of human trafficking over the past six months," said Ambassador Wayne.
