AMBASSADOR WAYNE ATTENDS A PRACTICAL TRAINING EXERCISE AT EXOLGAN'S PORT FACILITIES
April 23, 2009
Ambassador Wayne, together with officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Argentine Coast Guard officials and the Customs Deputy Director for the Metropolitan Area, attended a practical training exercise on weapons mass destruction detection at EXOLGAN's port facilities in Buenos Aires on April 23.
The joint exercise was aimed at better detecting sensitive materials included in international export control agreements. The exercise ended with a series of joint training courses for Argentine and American law enforcement officers.
This is the third joint training initiative, and it involved inspecting a container ship by using cutting-edge detection systems for the detection of potentially hazardous nuclear, biological and chemical materials. The training exercise was addressed to 25 students of the Argentine Customs Service, the Argentine Coast Guard, and the Federal Police Department, as well as to highly-ranked officers from these agencies.
The Ambassador pointed out that Argentina is regional leader in this issue and also highlighted Argentina's openness and efforts in this regard. He also praised the collaboration between agencies and the administrative cooperation shown in this exercise.
The Ambassador noted the high level of cooperation between the United States and Argentina in the area of sensitive export control, and he also underscored the US commitment to further enhance bilateral relations.
Coast Guard authorities and the Customs Deputy Director expressed their gratitude to the US for their trust in Argentina and the installation of this state-of-the-art equipment.
"I congratulate local officers and officials for their skills in detecting potentially hazardous substances and the cooperation provided to their American counterparts. Such collaboration is key to protect sensitive exports, as well as society as a whole," Ambassador Wayne said during his visit at the port.
